Things to See & Do -
Talkeetna is the jumping-off point for Denali
adventures of all shapes and sizes. Mountain climbers that are headed
to the mountain for their attempt at climbing North America’s tallest
mountain gather here to get their gear together and fly up to base
camp on the mountain. The less adventurous among us can take the ride
to base camp, or around the mountain by chartering one of the numerous
air taxi services in town. The rates for flightseeing trips is quite
reasonable, and the trip is often the crown jewel of any Alaska
vacation. Another way to explore the Talkeetna area is by jetboat.
Talkeetna is located on the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers,
offering some spectacular opportunities to see wildlife and
spectacular scenery from the comfort of a covered, heated riverboat.
You can see bald eagles, moose, salmon and bears, and great views of
Mt. McKinley.
Places To Eat
–
Café Michele is a favorite of both
visitors and locals in Talkeetna. Offering fine dining right in
downtown Talkeetna, it is within walking distance of the center of
town. Latitude 62 is on the south edge of town, and has many tasty
choices. Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge also offers wonderful dining
opportunities.
Places to Stay –
Talkeetna is a small town, and thus
most of the accommodations are small lodges, cabins and bed and
breakfasts. All are very comfortable and friendly, and many have
spectacular views of the Susitna valley and Mt. McKinley. There is one
luxury hotel in Talkeetna, offering wonderful rooms, fine dining, and
great views of Mt. McKinley.
Geography –
Talkeetna is located in the Susitna
Valley, about 110 road miles north of Anchorage, 140 miles south of
Denali Park, and 250 miles south of Fairbanks. Talkeetna is located on
three large, glacially-fed rivers; The Chulitna, the Talkeetna, and
the Susitna. These rivers drain the valleys on the south side of the
Alaska range, including the glaciers that flow off Mt. McKinley. While
the elevation of Talkeetna is close to sea level, two mountain ranges
flank the town. The Alaska Range stretches in an arc north and west of
town by about 40 miles. The Talkeetna mountains are directly east of
town. Getting to Talkeetna by road involves driving along the Parks
Highway, and turning onto Talkeetna Spur Road at mile 99 Parks
Highway. You’ll continue 15 miles north to the town.
Climate –
Talkeetna enjoys warm summer weather
with daily temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s, with a few days each
summer into the 80’s and even low 90’s. Winters in Talkeetna are cold,
with about 65 inches of snow a year. Temperatures can get as cold as
-35, but most days are between 15 above and 5 below zero.
