Alaska Tour Packages

If you are considering an Alaska tour package, there are certainly a lot of choices out there, and many of them may seem confusing or contradictory. Almost everyone has heard of Alaskan cruises, which operate between southcentral Alaska and Vancouver, British Columbia or Seattle, Washington. Many cruise packages will include an Alaska tour on land as an add-on either before or after the cruise. One can also take an Alaska tour that includes rail or motorcoach as the mode of transportation between different destinations.

While we do plan quite a few cruise packages, the vast majority of our Alaska tour packages are what we call "self-drive" or "self-guided" packages. What this means is that we provide all of the information and tools you need for your vacation - transportation, maps, travel documents, driving directions, general information, and twenty-four hour guest support... but you travel along on your own.

A big part of the reason that we prefer those types of Alaska tour packages is that when we speak to our clients about their expectations for their Alaska vacation, most are looking to avoid the more commercial, touristy and crowded parts of the experience, and prefer to have a more personalized and authentic visit here in Alaska.

There are a number of important advantages to a self-guided Alaska tour:

  • You have much greater flexibility in terms of destinations and activities that we can include in your Alaska tour package. Many of the more attractive destinations in Alaska are not terribly remote, but they are not served by the Alaska Railroad or by regular motorcoach service. So many parks, attractions and communities are not available on more structured tours, or if they are, they require considerable additional expense.
  • Travel by car is much faster than travel by rail or motorcoach - and for many destinations, the highway and the railroad parallel each other, so there are very few scenic attractions that you will miss by choosing rail over driving. In addition, when you choose to drive yourself, you have the ability to stop along the way and see things at your own pace, rather than at the pace of the railroad.
