From shallow, swift, rocky origins, the river changes its personality several times along its journey. We leave the Central Brooks Range and reach far into the western Brooks Range, across treeless tundra, and briefly, back into the boreal forest, before reaching Lower Noatak Canyon, as we through Noatak National Preserve.  The 460,000 caribou in the Western Arctic herd migrate through the valley on their way to summer range on the North Slope tundra, along with muskoxen, grizzlies, wolves and foxes.
